Dick Cheney's Ugly Record on Race Relations
The fact that these things have gone relatively unnoticed by the media at large astounds me.
Dick Cheney has a very ugly record when it comes to race.
Those of you who are non-racist Republicans (yes- I know that you're out there!) really need to open your eyes and see this man for what he is- A BIGOT.
These are the people who, in 2000, ran a push poll after losing to New Hampshire to John McCain, knew they had to win South Carolina. This is what the push poll asked:
"Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for John McCain for president if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?" (http://www.paulstone.org/archives/000021.html )
How do you think that played in the race concious South?

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, in 1984 Ashcroft called the St. Louis desegregation plan an "outrage against human decency." In his gubernatorial campaign that year, he widely advertised his fight against desegregation, claiming he had done "everything in his power legally" to fight the plan, and backed up that fact by telling

When Rep. Dick Cheney voted against a 1986 resolution calling for the release of Nelson Mandela and recognition of the African National Congress, Americans did know this man had been waiting decades for his freedom. Now, 20 years later, here comes George W. Bush. Stung by his defeat in the New Hampshire primary, Bush needed a trump card in the South Carolina Republican primary. This was a problem, since he and John McCain are running neck-and-redneck on issues dear to racists. Both have chickened out on saying it is time to stop flying the Confederate flag over the state capitol.
Bush may have found his ace. He kicked off his homestretch drive in South Carolina by speaking at Bob Jones University. Bob Jones represents one of Reagan's early signs of being antiblack. Reagan fought to revoke the Internal Revenue Service's authority to deny charitable tax exemptions to the school. The denial was over the school's ban on interracial dating.
